Where every number comes from.
The atlas uses official figures as published, and estimates only where none exist, marking which is which under every figure. The full method is in the map's Sources & methods, and each figure's ⓘ.

The words under each figure

| pro-rated | An official total shared out by a measured key (for example a district's vehicles by its own RTOs). |
| district rate | The district's own rate applied to an area inside it. |
| modelled | Shared out by a model because no one publishes it for the area. |
| as mapped | Counted from OpenStreetMap. |
| projected | Carried past the last official year. |
